The battles were raging on in the out skirts of the city. The city public water works had been blown up three days before. Power and fuel were rationed as vigilant government watch dogs monitored all the routes leading to the city, watching out for any conspirators. Dark – green clad as they were, they could not be seen from far. Many innocent citizens were tortured and thousands of villagers and town dwellers alike left their houses in search of security.
Two days before, the general populace had frozen in their homes with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding them. Shooting and general terror were now countrywide. Rumor had circulated at first, that the country had been invaded with the halt of civilian movement, none could tell with certainty what was happening. People were only speculating as to what might have happened.
The crisis had started in towns and spread to the villages. The day before, the villages were more concerned with the welfare of their relations in towns. They had watched with awe, TV pictures of mutilated dead bodies and children and women with amputated limbs lying on the streets. They were far off in town and were labeled enemies of the state, conspirators against the nation and saboteurs of civil order. The full meaning of the exercise had not been comprehended yet by the rural people. But they gradually came to know. Gun wielding men had whisked away a prominent member of an opposition party. Ssonko, for that was his name, was frog marched in his courtyard, interrogated to establish his identity and was tossed into a green tarpaulin covered lorry, which drove off. Minutes late, it stopped and a naked headless body was rolled out.
